SandboxVille 1.0: known issues and limits

Last updated October 5, 2026

We list these so you are never surprised. Each one has a plain workaround.

Things to know

  1. SandboxVille only sees what happens through SandboxVille. AI tools like Claude Code or Codex also work in their own window and can reach your files and the internet on their own. SandboxVille cannot see or stop that. Each AI's card says what SandboxVille could not check.
  2. Other programs on your computer can read SandboxVille's data folder. Any program running under your user account can read .sandboxville, including the key that lets AIs talk to the hub. That is how normal computers work. Keep your account to yourself and do not run programs you do not trust.
  3. Cloud AI keys are saved as plain text in that folder. Use a key with a spending limit, and delete it on the company's website when you are done.
  4. Friend mode is not encrypted, and it opens a visitor door to your network. When you start "SandboxVille for friends on my WiFi," other devices on the same network can reach that visitor door (your private controls are not on it). Use it only at home or on a network you trust, and close it when your friend leaves.
  5. A website open in your browser could make SandboxVille do small bits of work by asking for its pages. It cannot read the answers or change your town.
  6. If you delete a room's folder by hand, SandboxVille will not start until you put it back or reset your town. Use REMOVE in the Lobby instead. (This is on purpose, so nothing is lost without you knowing.)
  7. On Windows, two builds named "Base" and "base" share one file. Give builds different names.
  8. On slow computers the Guide's first tip can take more than 10 seconds.
  9. Mac and Linux need Node.js 20 or newer (free from nodejs.org). The Windows download includes it.
  10. Very slow computers draw slowly. SandboxVille needs a browser that runs 3D. Calm mode lowers the work when you are idle.
  11. Windows may warn the first time because the file is new. See the download page.
  12. Mac and Linux were tested less than Windows.
